When the Spanish effect started to fade, USA became more powerful. this made its presence stronger in Cuba. With Cuban Revolution (1959) the relation deteriorated. USA had declared embargo against Cuba which exists till date. As a result, USA has no formal relations with Cuba, USA businessmen are not allowed to trade with Cuba, exports are paid for in cash, credit is not allowed. USA still maintains a Naval base in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. This was part of the Platt Amendment which gave USA power to intervene in internal affairs of cuba. even though the treaty is revoked, USA still maintains the base. This is why the recent handshake between Barack Obama and Fidel Castro at Nelson Mandela’s funeral created quite a stir.
